What is hydroxypropyl starch?
Hydroxypropyl Starch (PHPS) is a vegan plant‑based starch derived from non‑GMO corn, potato, cassava, and other plant sources through a controlled chemical modification process. The introduction of hydroxypropyl groups into the starch molecular structure enhances its solubility, flexibility, and film‑forming properties – making it an ideal material for plant‑based softgel capsule shells. Unlike gelatin, which is derived from animal by‑products, PHPS is 100% plant‑based, allergen‑free, and compliant with vegan, halal, and kosher dietary requirements.

Technical Advantage
Our technological advantages
- 01
Batch Consistency
China‘s first fully automatic hydroxypropyl starch production line ensures complete batch‑to‑batch consistency, with stable viscosity, transparency, and gelation behavior across every batch.
- 02
Crystal Clear Shell
PHPS‑based capsule shells offer exceptional clarity and a premium look that surpasses gelatin and other plant alternatives – perfect for beauty brands pursuing a luxurious aesthetic.
- 03
Cost-effectiveness
The gel yield ratio reaches up to 1:3.6. The gel solution remains stable for 24 hours after melting, and waste gel can be fully recovered and reused – significantly reducing unit production costs.
- 04
Customized Formula
Pure starch gel and blended plant‑based gel. Custom formulations co‑developed with our R&D team to meet your needs.
Production process
7-step gel melting and pellet pressing process (about 4 hours)
Weighing ratio
Ingredients: Water: Glycerol = 1:(1.3-1.5):(0.3-0.5)
01
Water oil cold mixing
Add purified water and glycerol, begin stirring. After 3 minutes, withdraw 20% of the blend from the tank bottom and reserve
02
Feeding
Feed raw materials steadily into the gel melting tank. Rinse the stirrer and tank walls with the reserved water‑oil blend
03
Heating adhesive glue
Jacket at 110°C, tank set to 102°C. Start heating. When the tank reaches 90°C, hold for 90–120 minutes
04
Room temperature stirring
Stir at ambient temperature for 10–15 minutes to ensure uniform gel consistency.
05
Primary vacuum
Jacket at 102°C. Vacuum for 1–3 min to degas the gel solution
06
Secondary vacuum & Encapsulation
40–60 min after primary vacuum: adjust jacket to 92°C, stop stirring, vacuum for 1–3 min. Gel is ready for encapsulation
